Standing upon Bedloe's Island, this famous statue was presented to the United States by the French Republic in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence. It is probably the most famous piece of architectural symbolism in the two Americas, the object which attracts the first glance of the arriving emigrant and the last fond look of the departing citizen of the United States.
