ON Saturday last the Emprefs was pleafed in and obftruction,

to admit all the foreign minifters to the honour of dining and paffing the whole day with her, at a building called the Hermitage; to which the minifters of the council were likewise invited. Two tables were provided for the company; the emprefs prefided at one, and the great duke at the other; and the places were ballotted for. In the evening, the company being increafed, there was a ball, which her imperial majesty was pleafed to honour with her prefence, and afterwards a fupper. During the whole of the entertainment her imperial majefty gave every proof of affability and condefcenfion. SWEDEN.

Stockholm, April 9. In order to encourage population, the king has excused from the payment of perfonal contribution, such as poll-tax, &c. all peasants who have four or more children.

POLAND.

Warsaw, April 10. The congrefs at Bucharest broke up the 22d ult. but it is af fured that the plenipotentiaries, before they departed, came to an agreement to renew the conferences at the fame place whenever it fhould be judged neceffary: however, moft people have very little hopes of seeing the negociations renewed, as the court of Peterf bourg will hardly be prevailed upon to prolong the armistice, it being very evident that the Porte has nothing in view but to gain time. All we have to expect is, to fee the campaign opened immmediately with more vigour than ever, and we have authentick advice, that the Porte has paid a very conLiderable fum to a certain power.

Warfaw, April 28. The laft letters from Moldavia inform us, that Field-Marshal Count de Romanzow had received orders from Petersbourg to recommence the operations against the Turks; but that general had reprefented to the court, that it was impoffible for him to do fo at prefent, on account of the drought which prevails in thofe countries, where there is an abfolute want of forage; but that in the mean time he will fend fome detachments to the other fide of the Danube.

Warsaw, May 5. By advices of good. authority, two small detachments of Ruffian troops, commanded by Major-general Prince Galitzin, paffed the Danube, and attacked a corps of 600 troops, part of whom were killed, and the reft routed. Fifty Turks were made prifoners, and fome trophies were alfo taken.

Dantzick, April 12. The British conful here lately received a courier, with advice

and no longer pay the additional duties exacted by the Pruffians.]

From the Frontiers of Poland, April 28. The Pruffian toll at Dantzick, which was fufpended for nine days paft, is now again demanded, and even the ships which were then fuffered to go free are now obliged to pay it. The orders for this proceeding came from Berlin the 17th inftant; but the rea fons for it are not yet known.

GERMANY.

Vienna, May 8. They write from Commora, that on the 30th of April a violent fhock of an earthquake was felt there. It lafted ten feconds; but happily no great damage was done,

TURKEY.

Conftantinople, March 17. The utmoft diligence is exerted to fit out the fleet here, part of which is to be employed in carrying provifions and warlike ftores to Oczakow, and to protect the navigation in the Black Sea: the reft, being the largest ships, are to cruize at the entrance of the Dardanelles, as they did laft year. The greateft difficulty will be to man them, all our beft failors having run away, and the reft commit robberies and murders continually, in spite of the utmoft vigilance of the government.

We are affured that Ali Bey, after having taken Jaffa and Jerufalem, began his march with a powerful army for Egypt, with an intention of rendering himself mafter of Cairo,

FRANCE.

Paris, April 30. A certain nobleman, charmed with the beauty and talents of a young actress, whofe prudence he has expe rienced, fent her a few days ago the following "Madam, it is faid that you are letter. virtuous, and that you have taken the refolution always to remain fo. This is, doubtlefs, very fine, and even a novelty in this age. I exhort you never to change your mind, and at the same time beg your acceptance of the contract which I now make, to allow you fifty guineas per month while this humour lafts. If, perchance, it should hap pen to pafs over, I request the preference, and will then make it up one hundred."This laft propofal may, perhaps, be capable of ftaggering the firmeft refolution. It is not yet known what answer has been returned by the young actress to her noble and generous admirer.

One Mr. Gelas, curate of Longrate, in the diocese of Agen, aged 101 years, fell into a trance the 31st of laft month, when every

body thought he was dead, infomuch that preparations were made for his funeral; but just when they were going to carry him to the church he awoke, and afked for fomething to cat, and has fince enjoyed perfect health.

Paris, May 7. They had an earthquake at St. Malo on the 15th of laft month, and another more violent on the 23d. Shocks were felt in many other parts of France nearly at the fame time.

Sailors are ftill raifing at Marseilles for the fervice of the fquadron arming at Toulon. No French fhip is permitted to leave that port, and 300 bakers are employed day and night in the arsenal in making bifcuits. Paris, May 14. A report which had prevailed here, that this city was to be deftroyed by a comet in the night, between the 12th and 13th of this month, fo terrified many weak and credulous people, that whole families actually quitted Paris on the account, and are gone into foreign countries.

SPAI N.

Madrid, April 19. The 13th of this month we felt here two fhocks of an earthquake, which lafted one minute, but happily did no damage. The fame shocks were alfo felt at Cadiz ; but we do not hear that the fea was agitated by them.

The king's edict, ordering all foreign merchants to keep their books in the Spanish language, is revoked.

The warlike preparations, which have been making at Barcelona, are now in a manner fufpended,

May

They write from Lifbon, that on the ad of April, about four o'clock in the morning, feveral fhocks of an earthquake were felt there, which occafioned fuch a confternation in that capital, that most of the inhabitants left the churches and houses, and fed to the fields; but happily no damage was received from thefe fhocks.

ITALY.

Rome, April 10. The affair of the jefuits, which though it feems juft brought to a termination, is become very interefting; for the court of Vienna, it is faid, has given the pope to understand, that the not only does not confent to the fuppreffion of that fociety, but likewife will have it fubfift in

their eftates.

The coronation of the king of Sardinia will take place in September next. That monarch has not only compleated the regiments actually in his fervice, but hap raifed new ones; fo that he will have 40,000 men ready to enter the field next June.

BARBAR Y.

Tangier, April 14. On Monday last, between five and fix in the morning, we were alarmed by a very violent shock of an earthquake, which lafted about two minutes, and has deftroyed 98 houfes, and fhaken the town fo much, that the remaining houses muft be rebuilt. We hear of only three lives loft; but numbers of the inhabitants have been dragged from under the ruins very much bruised. Yesterday about half an hour after eleven we felt another shock, tho' not fo violent as the former,

An ACCOUNT of the INHABITANTS of OTAHEITE, a lately difcovered Iland in the South-Sea; comprehending many curious Particulars relative to their Genius, Manners, and domeftic Life.-Collected from Dr. Hawkesworth's Compilation of the Voyages to the Southern Hemisphere.

HE Ifland of Otaheite is fituated in the South Sea, between 149 and 150 deg. W. long. and between 17 and 18 S. lat. It confits of two peninfulas, and measures about 30 leagues in circuit. It is furrounded by a reef of coral rock, which forms feveral excellent bays and harbours, where there is room and depth of water for any number of the largest fhips. The face of the country, except that part of it which borders upon the fea, is very uneven; it rifes in ridges that run up into the middle of the island, and there form mountains which may be seen at the distance of 60 miles. Between the foot of thefe ridges and the fea is a border of low land, furrounding the whole island, except in a few places where the_ridges rife directly from the fea. The foil is extremely rich and fertile, watered by a great number of rivulets of excellent water, and covered with fruit-trees of various kinds, fome of which are of a stately growth and thick foliage, fo as to form one continued wood. The low land that lies between the foot of the ridges and the fea, and fome of the vallies, are the only parts that are inhabited, and here it is populous.

The houfes do not form villages or towns, but are ranged along the whole border at the diitance of about fifty yards from each other, with little plantations of plantains, the tree which furnishes them with cloth. The whole island could furnish 6780 fighting men, from which the number of inhabitants may eafily be computed. Though this ifland produces no kind of fruit that is common to Europe, nor garden ftuff, pulfe, legumes, nor grain of any kind, yet it abounds in fruit, &c. of various kinds: thefe, which ferve the inhabitants for food, the earth produces fpontaneoufly, or with fo little culture, that they feem to be exempted from the firit general curfe, that "man fhould eat his bread in the fweat of his brow."-Of tame animals they have only hogs, dogs, and poultry; neither is there a wild animal in the idland, except ducks, pigeons, paroquets, with a few other birds, and rats, there being no other quadruped, nor any ferpent. But the fea abounds in plenty of moft excellent fish, to catch which is their principal labour.

The inhabitants of Otaheite are of the largest fize of Europeans. The men are tall, itrong, well-limbed, and finely shaped. The women of the fuperior rank are alfo above our N 2 middle
