During the courfe of the bufinefs lord Mansfield took occafion to observe, that the right of hiffing and applauding in a theatre, was an unalterable right, but that there was a wide diftinction between expreffing the natural fenfations of the mind as they arofe from what was feen and heard, and executing a preconcerted defign not only to hiss an actor when he was playing a part, but also to drive him from the Theatre, and promote his utter

ruin.

Since the above decifion, the managers of Covent Garden Theatre have met, and generously agreed to give up their claim to the hundred pounds worth of tickets.

The 16th inftant (being recommended by the provincial congrefs to be observed as a day of fafting and prayer) on the morn ing of this day, the Society at the Weft end of Bofton, were greatly difturbed by a party of officers and foldiers of the 4th, or king's own regiment. Philadelphia, March 29. On Thurfday laft the felect men of the town of Billerica prefented a remonftrance to General Gage, complaining, "that on the 8th inftant one T. Ditfon, an inhabitant of the faid town, was tarred and feathered, and very much abused, by a party of his majefty's 47th regiment, under the command of Lieut. Col. Nefbit; we know of no crime this man had been guilty of, unless that of declaring himfelf a friend to the liberties of this oppreffed country."

FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

CCORDING to the laft advices from

In short, the diforder was fo great, that the troops were called in, who took up ioo of the rioters: at laft it grew to fuch a heighth, and lafted fo long, that more than 500 perfons were either killed or wounded. As foon as the court knew of this infurred. tion, they fent fome more particular orders thither, and the comptroller general of the finances iffued an arret of the council for the fuppreffion of the outrages. Many other exceffes have fince been committed, and fome great perfonages are suspected of being the inftigators of them.

We are told from Venice, that above one thousand inhabitants of the village of

A Madrid, the warlike preparations mak- Vaiteline, in the Breffan, affembled fately

The colonels of all the regiments have received orders to grant no leave of abfence to any officers, and to recal all who are from their corps; and it is aflured that a fleet from Carthagena is ordered to join one at Cadiz, all which it is fuppofed must have some other meaning than an expedition against the states of Barbary.

The different accounts that have lately appeared in public, regarding the difpofitions of many powers, and the augmentation which is daily making of the troops, causes every one to imagine we are at the eve of a war. In Bavaria each regiment of horfe is augmenting with 100 men. It is faid there will be a camp near Wefel of 50,000l. men, and that the lector Palatine will affemble 12.000 men near Duffeldorp.

On Eafter Tuesday there was a terrible dif. turbance at Dijon, in France, on account of the fcarcity and dearness of corn. Letters from Conftantinople mention à fact, of which the Ottoman hiftory cannot produce many examples, and proves, that though the late war may have coft the Turks a great deal of money, it has taught them how neceffary it is to deviate from their antient cuftoms, and follow the tactick rules of the other European powers, which they have begun by eftablishing a military school, under the direction of a profeffor named Kermowand, an Englishman by birth, and who was fome years ago in the fervice of one of the principal powers. He opened his courfe of ftudies the 15th of last month. This is a plan of the chevalier Tott's, who, with the above-mentioned profeffor, is to have the inftruction of the fcholars; the latter has a penfion granted him of 3000 piaftres per annum.
