The entertainment at the Manfion-house is faid to have exceeded every thing the citizens have been accustomed to fee at their Eafter ball.

In the Egyptian hall, where the company dined, was a beautiful piece, painted in an inimitable tafte, which, it is faid, reprefented the triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne, ar I love united with wine. Befides the ufual profufion of wines and eatables, which were remarkably good in their kind, and set off in the greatest elegance, as well as much warmer than commonly is the cafe at thofe great dinners; the guests were here prefented with another novelty, which had a moft pleafing effect, many of Mr. Cox's pieces of mechanifm, from the Museum, all in full tune, and which continued their mufical movements, during the greatest part of the dinner. The defert was in the fame pleafing style, at once great and elegant. In the bail room tafte and magnificence prevailed: an "It is with the utmost aftonishment that emblematical painting at the top exhibited to I find any of my fubjects capable of encou- the eye a beautiful landscape of rural felicity raging the rebellious difpofition which un-nymphs and fwains tripping over the green, happily exifts in fome of my colonies in North and feeming to invite to the sprightly dance America: having entire confidence in the thefe below. wisdom of my parliament, the great council of the nation, I will fteadily pursue thofe measures which they have recommended for the fupport of the constitutional rights of Great Britain, and the protection of the commercial interefts of my kingdoms." FRIDAY 14.

To which addrefs, remonstrance, and petition, his majefty was pleased to return the following answer.

The following is faid to be a copy of a let-

from whence tah like fo many rivers into the Danube, then covered with ice, which did not break till feven o'clock on the morning of the 15th; after which the water rofe fo as to be perceived every moment, and very foon overflowed the roads, carrying away (befides large quantities of ice) trees, wood, mills, &c. The islands above this place ftopt the ice, which accumulating formed mountains and impeded the progress of the water, which nevertheless rofe flowly, and only inundated fome low houfes, whofe inhabitants had quitted them. On the 16th the ice began to fall, and the violent rifing of the waters was fo rapid as fcarce to be perceived before moft of the lower town was laid under water, and the inhabitants had just time to fave themfelves and children, the water having rifen feven or nine feet in half an hour. By the help of 18 boats, which were brought in carts, the people were taken out of their attick ftories, and fome out of trees, where they had gone for refuge. The waters continued to rife more and more, and fwept away all the houfes to the barracks, and the great ftone bridge without the town was under water; the road on the fide of the Danube, and all the houfes, were five feet under water. The danger was then univerfal, and the alarm general, when happily about noon the water began to fall as fast as it had rofe. About 70 houfes have been carried away.
