from one to two feet water in their lower rooms, and boats were rowed from the Beach up to the Point bridge. This ifland was in a manner laid under water, and we hear that feveral hundreds of cattle, fheep, &c. have been drowned, and much damage done to the fields fowed with corn. A whole row of boufes were entirely fwept away from the back of the Point, by the ftrength of the fea, but happily no lives (as we hear yet) are loft. The gale continues yet, but not with that violence, and the tide will not flow this day much above its customary height.

Another letter from Portsmouth confirms the above, and adds, that great damage has been done at Cowes in the Isle of Wight, where two men were drowned in the ftorehoufes, in endeavouring to fave some goods,

Prudence in the gaoler, and the dreadful remembrance of what paffed on a fimilar occafon in the mayoralty of Alderman Geale, made him comply with this daring request. He opened the prison doors, and delivered up the culprits to those who demanded them.

T

AFFAIRS.

Bofton, Dec. 22.

HE following letter from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, dated Dec. 16, is juft received here:

"We have been in confufion here for two days paft on account of an exprefs from Bofton, informing, that two regiments were coming to take poffeffion of our fort. By beat of drum 200 men immediately affembled, and went to the caftle in two gundalows, who en their way were joined by 150 more, and demanded the furrender of the fort, which Capt. Cochran refused, and fired three guns, but no lives were loft; upon which they immediately fcaled the walls, difarmed the captain S

and his men, took poffeffion of 97 barrels of powder, put it on board the gundalows, brought it up to town, and went off with it. to fome diftance in the country. Yesterday the town was full of men from the country, who marched in in form; chofe a committee to wait on the governor; who affured them he knew of no fuch defign as fending troops, fhips, &c. This morning I hear there are a thousand or fifteen hundred men on their march to town. The governor and council fat yesterday on the affair, and are now meeting again. The men who are come down are thofe of the beft property and note in the province."

Bofton, Dec, 26. A gentleman is arrived at Salem in a veffel from Cape Nichola Mole, which he left the 17th November: just as he was coming away, a veffel arrived from the island of Cuba, which the left only two days before, the mafter of which informed him, that he was obliged to quit the island in

the greatest hurry, and leave all his cargo be hind, there being fo many Spanish velels cruizing to intercept all provifion veffels bound to the island of Jamaica, that it was hardly poffible for any to efcape. This may be depended on as a fact, and all the French and Spaniards were employed night and day in repairing and building fortifications with the greatest expedition, and furnishing all their garrifons with a large ftock of provisions and ammunition. During his ftay at the Mole, tranfports were arriving daily with troops and provisions,

Salem, Dec. 20. Our brethren of New Hampshire and Rhode-ifland have fignalized

themselves in a manner that does them the greatest honour and it is with pleasure we can add, that the colony of Connecticut merits our highest regard for their prefent affiduity and vigilance in difciplining their militia, which confifts of thirty regiments. -Indeed the whole united colonies are ex

tremely active and zealous in the common caufe, all nobly exerting themfelves for carrying into execution the measures agreed upon by the late continental congrefs.

We hear that the number of barrels of gunpowder taken care of by the good people of New Hampshire, in their late expedition to Fort William and Mary, fituate about three miles below Portsmouth, amounted to 106; together with a confiderable number of cannon, all the fhot, fmall arms, &c.

Newport, Rhode-Ifland, Dec. 26. We mentioned lately that 300 troops had failed from Bofton, fuppofed to be deftined to take po fion of our fort, which we find to be a miitake, occafioned by a number of foldiers being put on board a fhip in the harbour of Bofton, and fent fome distance off, as an bofpital for the fick foldiers and feamen.

By a gentleman arrived in town laft evening, from Bofton, we are informed, that the inhabitants there are in good spirits; that

the

the troops are very fickly and die faft; that feven of one regiment were buried in a day laft week; that general Gage's private fecretary, and another officer, were to be buried Jaft evening; that fuch of the troops as are able are marched out three or four miles from the town, almoft every day, for their health; and that upwards of 500 had de

Serted.

New York, Dec. 26. A gentleman at Boston writes to his friend here, of the 12th inftant: "The day before yefterday it was moved in provincial congrefs, that arms be immediately taken up against the King's troops; but one of the members got up and told them fuch a move was infamous, when at the fame time the members knew, that neither Connecticut nor any of the fouthern colonies meant to oppofe his majefty's arms; on which account the congrefs immediately diffolved, and a new one is to be chofen, to meet the 10th of next month. At Plymouth they are now beating up for volunteers to attack the troops; the parties fent for a parfon to pray for them, who refufed to comply; but he was obliged to attend on being fent for a fecond time, on penalty of being fhot."

By a gentleman that left Quebec about 20 days ago, we learn, that the reports we bave had here of the Canadians and Indians being to be raised and sent to act against the people of Bofon, &c. is entirely groundless; and that should a thing of that nature be propofed to the French, it would be rejected with difdain.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS.
Y the laft accounts from Petersbourg, we
learn, that the Empress has published a

B

manifefto, by which her majefty pardon's Pugatfchew for all his crimes againft her facred perfon; but at the fame time being perfuaded that the welfare and fafety of her fubjects demand that such an atrocious offender fhould be brought to juftice, her majefty delivers him up to the judges to be by them punished according to the rigour of the law, for the various crimes he has been guilty of.

The States General have published a declaration, dated the 23d of laft month, setting forth, That, as the Emperor of Moroc co had broken the peace concluded with them in 1752, ordering, that all veffels belonging to the Republick fhould be feized as lawful prize from the first day of the fame month, their High Might ineffes have given the neceffary orders for the equipment of divers fhips of war; and for the better encouragement of their failors and marines, have declared, that all prizes taken from the enemy fhould become the entire property of the captors, befides other advantages.

The Emperor of Morocco ftill continues to carry on the fiege of Melille. He has 25 mortars before that place, from which have been thrown 2407 large bombs, by which 11 perfons have been killed, and 165 wounded, moftly in a flight manner. It is faid the Moors fhew uneafinefs at the long continuance of the fiege, and that the Emperor had propofed to them to make a general attack, but that they had received a check, and had loft a great number of horses. The Emperor has, however, ordered one of his fons to bring a re-inforcement of 17,000 horfe.
