PREFACE.

HAVING completed the labors of another year, we are led to review the past with feelings of devout and deep gratitude to the God of Zion, for all the mercies bestowed upon us in the discharge of duties which have been felt to be onerous to ourselves, and important in relation to the Church of Christ, whose servants we willingly are, for the Lord's sake.

To our Brethren and Friends who during the past year have favored us with their valued assistance, we also beg to tender our unfeigned thanks for their continued sympathy and support, and for every expression of their good will towards the Work in which we have so long been engaged, and for the encouragement and efficient aid afforded us at a time when we have needed the co-operation and united efforts of our Friends to stimulate us in that onward course, which, with the Divine help, we have been enabled to pursue. In the midst of discouraging circumstances, and surrounded by adverse influences, we have had to hold on our way, sometimes, indeed, under the impression that however undesirable may have been the difficulties experienced, they may prove needful to urge us and our beloved Friends to rely more unreservedly on the promise of a faithful God, whose encouraging sanction we have so often received, and whose dealings with us in our public labors have always been fraught with mercy, lovingkindness, and truth.

We have received numerous testimonies to the usefulness of the HERALD among the Lord's poor and afflicted people, who have
