6 Lo! He lays His glory by:

Born, that man no more may die :
Born, to raise the sons of earth:
Born, to give them second birth. :

66

7 Sing we then, with angels sing; Glory to the new-born King! Glory in the highest heaven,

Peace on earth, and man forgiven."

332.

"Unto us a Child is born." Isa. ix. 6. 7's.

1 BRIGHT and joyful is the morn,
For to us a Child is born:

From the highest realms of heaven,
Unto us a Son is given.

2 On His shoulder He shall bear
Power and majesty, and wear
On His vesture and His thigh,
Names most awful, names most high.
3 Wonderful in counsel He,
The Incarnate Deity!

Sire of Ages ne'er to cease,
King of kings, and Prince of Peace.
4 Come and worship at His feet;
Yield to Christ the homage meet;
From His manger to His throne,
Homage due to God alone.

333.

"The Prince of Peace." Isa. ix. 6.

1 WHEN war on earth suspended
His wild career of woes,

The Prince of Peace descended,
A guiltier strife to close.

7's. & 6's.

Vain battles worms were waging
With their Creator, God:
He came, and wrath assuaging,
Made peace with His own blood.
2 The storm that flamed and lowered,
Was calm at His command.
The rod of justice flowered,
Like Aaron's, in His hand.
That sceptre, love revealing,
Rebels, approach and kiss.
Its leaves are for your healing;
Its fruits, immortal bliss.

334.

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced." Matt. ii. 10.
7's.

1 SONS of men! behold from far,
Hail the long-expected star:
Jacob's star, that gilds the night,
Guides bewildered nature right.

2 Fear not that there hence should flow
Wars or pestilence below:

Wars it bids, and tumults, cease,
Ushering in the Prince of Peace.

3 Mild it shines on all beneath,
Piercing through the shades of death,
Scattering error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.

4 Nations all, far off and near,
Haste to see your God appear:
Haste, for Him your hearts prepare:
Meet Him manifested there.

335. "We have seen his star in the East." Matt. ii. 2. P.M.

1 BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the morning!

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid.

Star of the East, the horizon adorning! Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

2 Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining;

Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall;

Angels adore Him, in slumber reclining,Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all.

3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,

Odours of Edom, and offerings divine, Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the

ocean,

Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation; Vainly with gold would His favour

secure.

Richer by far is the heart's adoration : Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning!

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid.

Star of the East, the horizon adorning! Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

336. "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace.”

Luke ii. 29. C. M.

1 UPON a world of guilt and night, The Morning-star arose.

"Enough! mine eyes have seen its light; Now welcome death's repose."

2 Prophetic joy those words inspired,
When, in the Virgin's Son,
Simeon beheld the long-desired,
And blessed God's Holy One.

3 "Now lettest Thou Thy servant, Lord! his soul resign:

In

peace

These eyes, according to Thy word,
See Judah's Day-star shine:

4 "The Light of life, whose healing ray
Shall sin's deep shades dispel;
To Gentile lands salvation's day;
Thy glory, Israel !”

5 Faith still beholds her risen Lord,
Though hid from mortal sight.
Shine forth, O Saviour! in Thy word,
And fill the world with light.

337.

"To preach deliverance to the captives."
Luke iv. 18.

C. M.

1 THE Saviour of mankind is come; The Saviour promised long.

Let every

heart prepare a throne,

And every voice a song.

2 He comes the prisoners to unbind,
Who Satan's captives lay;
And on the eye-balls of the blind
Το pour celestial day.

3 He comes to bind the broken heart,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And heavenly treasures to impart
To all the humble poor.

4 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace!
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

Nor shall Thy ransomed church e'er cease
To glory in Thy name.

338. "And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding." Luke ii. 47. O.M.

1 ABASHED be all the boast of age:
Be hoary learning dumb.
Expounder of the mystic page,
Behold an Infant come!

2 O Wisdom! whose unfading power
Beside the Eternal stood,

To frame, in nature's earliest hour,
The land, the sky, the flood;
