The great extent of the work has been, and will always be, a serious obstacle to its general acceptance; but this obstacle is removed by the condensation of the six volumes into two, which Miss Martineau has effected in the work we now re-issue. is not for us to speak of the execution of this work; but we may fitly mention, that it was so highly approved by the author himself, that, in his annual issue of his catalogue of works sanctioned by him, he substituted Miss Martineau's version for the original.
