1362, LIEUT.-COLONEL WILLIAM COWELL, C. B. ENSIGN 89th foot in 1797; Lieut. 2d foot, 1st June, 1801; Lieut. 68th foot in 1803; Capt. in the R Reg. of Malta, 8th Dec. 1804; Maj. 16th March, 1809; Maj. 42d foot, 30th May, 1811; and brevet L.-Col. 3d March, 1814. This officer served in Ireland during the rebellion, and afterwards at Sicily and Malta; he was employed at the advanced posts during the siege, and chiefly with a company of Natives, whom he raised, clothed, and disciplined; he served the campaign of 1801 in Egypt: was present at the landing, and in the battles of the 13th and 21st, action at Rhamanies, taking of Cairo and Alexandria; he served in Malta, and assisted in the formation of the R' Reg. of Malta, and subsequently served in Sicily and Spain; he was present at the battles of Nivelle and Orthes, for which he has received a medal and one clasp; he is a Companion of the Bath.

1363. LIEUT-COL. SIR ROBERT GARDINER, K. C. B. SECOND Lieut. R' Artillery, 7th April, 1797; First Lieut. 16th July, 1799; Capt.-Lieut. 12th Oct. 1804; Capt. 18th Nov. 1811; brev. Maj. 27th April, 1812; and L.-Col. 3d March, 1814. This officer served in Spain and Portugal: his name was particularly mentioned in the despatches, after the capture of Badajos, (Vide vol. i. p. 208.) he has received a cross and two clasps for the battles of Barrosa, Salamanca, Vittoria, Orthes, and Toulouse, and siege of Badajos; he also served in Flanders, and was present at the battle of Waterloo; he is a Commander of the Bath, and A.-d.-C. to H. R. H. Prince Leopold, of Saxe Coburg.

1364. LIEUT.-COL. WILLIAM LEWIS HERFORD, C. B. ENSIGN 12th foot, 1st June, 1797; First Lieut. 23d foot, 7th March, 1800; Capt. 25th Oct. 1804; Maj. 16th Aug. 1812; and brevet L.-Col. 3d March, 1814; he is now on the half-pay of the 23d foot. This officer served in Spain and Portugal; he has received a medal and one clasp for the battles of Orthes and Toulouse, at which he commanded the 23d foot. L.-Col. H. is a Companion of the Bath.

1365. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL GEORGE RAMSDEN.

ENSIGN 1st foot guards, 29th Nov. 1803; Lieut. and Capt. 12th Sept. 1807; and Capt. and L.-Col. 10th March, 1814. This officer served in 1810 as extra A.-d.-C. to Maj.Gen. Hoghton in Spain.

1366. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL SAMUEL LAMBERT. ENSIGN 1st foot guards, 5th Nov. 1803; Lieut. and Capt. 27th Aug. 1807; Adjut. 21st Feb. 1811; and Capt. and L.Col. 16th March, 1814. Served in Spain and Portugal; and was appointed to act as Major of Brigade to the 1st brigade of foot guards from the 10th of March, 1814.

1367. LIEUT.-COLONEL GEORGE MUTTLEBURY, C. B. LIEUT. 55th foot, 3d Sept. 1795; Capt. 21st Feb. 1798; Capt. 69th foot, 5th Dec. 1802; brev. Maj. 25th July, 1810; Maj. 69th foot, 28th Nov. 1811; brev. L.-Col. 17th March, 1814; L.-Col. 69th foot, 10th Aug. 1815; placed on halfpay at the reduction of his regiment, and re-appointed L.-Col. 3d July, 1817.

1369. LIEUT.-COL. THE HON. JAMES STANHOPE. ENSIGN 1st foot guards, 26th Dec. 1803; Lieut. and Capt. 14th Jan. 1808; brev. Maj. 21st June, 1815; and Capt. and L.-Col. 1st foot guards, 25th July, 1814. This officer served in Spain, Portugal, Flanders, and France: in 1810 he acted as extra A.-d.-C. to Lord Lynedock: in 1812 was appointed a Dep.-Assist.-Quar.-Mast.-Gen., and in 1813 an Assist. Quar.-Mast.-Gen. in the Peninsula: he was present at the battle of Waterloo.

1371. LIEUT.-COLONEL JOHN FREMANTLE, C. B. ENSIGN 2d foot guards, 17th Oct. 1805; Lieut. and Capt. 2d Aug. 1810; brev. Maj. 21st June, 1813; and L.-Col. 21st March, 1814. This officer was one of the earliest scholars in the junior department of the Military College at Marlow: in 1805 he went to study at Lunenburg, from whence he proceeded, on his appointment to an Ensigncy, to Bremen, and joined the army under Lord Cathcart: he next served as extra A.-d.-C. to Gen. Whitelock in the expedition to Buenos Ayres, where he volunteered to serve with the rifle corps, and was taken prisoner whilst under the command of the late M.-Gen. R. Crawfurd in 1800 he accompanied Lord Howden to Lisbon, as private secretary, and in the same year joined his batt. with which he served as Adjut. in most of the actions in the Peninsula, until appointed, in 1812, extra A.-d.-C.; and in 1813 placed on the establishment of the Duke of Wellington as A.-d.-C. and private secretary. He was the bearer of the despatches to England, aunouncing the battle of Vittoria, and also that of Orthes. He served also in Flanders, and was present at the battle of Waterloo. He has the honor of wearing a medal for the battle of Orthes, and is a Companion of the Bath. L.-Col. F. is now serving as Dep. Adj.-Gen. in Jamaica.

1372. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JOHN MIDGLEY.

LIEUT. late 115th foot, 3d Dec. 1794; Capt. York Fuzileers, 19th March, 1796; Capt. and Commandant of Tilbury Fort, 4th June, 1807; brev. Maj. 25th April, 1808; and L.Col. 7th April, 1814: he is now on half-pay. L.-Col. M. for some years commanded the depôt at Tilbury Fort.

1373. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL WILLIAM BALFOUR. ENSIGN in Hanger's Recruiting Corps, 31st Aug. 1798; Lieut. 40th foot, 8th Aug. 1799; Capt. 22d Sept. 1802; Maj. 4th Feb. 1808; brev. L.-Col. 12th April, 1814; and Maj. 3d foot, 8th July, 1819. Served in Spain and Portugal: and has received a medal for the battle of the Nivelle, at which he commanded the 40th foot.

1374. LIEUT.-COLONEL JOHN WILLIAM BEATTY, C. B. CAPT. in the 7th foot, 19th Aug. 1804; Maj. 7th Jan. 1812; and brev. L.-Col. 12th April, 1814. Served in Spain and Portugal in 1811, and was attached to the Portuguese service, and in Aug. 1813, directed to return to his reg.: he has received a medal and two clasps for the battles of Salamanca, Orthes, and Toulouse. He is a Companion of the Bath.

1375. LIEUT.-COL. LORD GEORGE WILLIAM RUSSELL. THIS officer entered the army as Lieut. 1st dragoons, 11th Sept. 1806; and in 1807, served at the siege of Copenhagen as A.-d.-C. to Sir G. Ludlow; he obtained a company in the 23d dragoons, 18th May, 1808, and commanded his troop in Ireland, and embarked with it at Cork, in 1809, for Lisbon: his reg. being nearly destroyed and himself wounded at the battle of Talavera, he returned home with it in the winter of the same year. In the beginning of 1810, he went to Cadiz, then besieged by the French, as A.-d.-C. to Lord Lynedock, and was present at the battle of Barrosa: in 1811, he was ordered to join the army under the Duke of Wellington. When Lord Lynedock returned home on account of ill health this officer accompanied him, but was shortly afterwards appointed A.-d.-C. to the Duke of Wellington: he obtained a Majority in the 102d foot, 4th Feb. 1813; and was appointed brevet L.-Col. 12th April, 1814, on bringing home the despatches after the battle of Toulouse. His Lordship served in France on the staff of the Duke of Wellington: and is now on the half pay of the 42d foot.

1376. LIEUT.-COL. GEORGE AUGUSTUS HENDERSON, ENSIGN 2d foot, 1st Oct. 1794; Lieut. 1st March, 1795; Capt. 20th Aug. 1801; Maj. 4th June, 1813; Insp. Field Officer in Nova Scotia; and brev. L.-Col. 12th April, 1814; and L.-Col. 2d foot, 16th June, 1814: he is now on half pay. This officer served in Spain and Portugal; and in 1812, acted as A.-d.-C. to Lord Dalhousie.

1377. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL GEORGE JENKINSON. FIRST Lieut. in the R' Artillery, 3d Dec. 1800; Second Capt. 1st June, 1806; brevet Maj. 1st June, 1813; brevet L.-Col. 12th April, 1814; and Capt. in the R' Art. 20th Dec. 1814. This officer went to the Academy at Woolwich in the year 1797, and joined the army under Sir R. Abercromby in 1799, and was with it at the landing in Holland, at the capture of the Helder, and the subsequent events of that campaign, until the return of the army to England. He joined, with a troop of horse artillery, the army of the Duke of Wellington, in 1809, and was with it during all its service, until its embarkation at Calais for England. He received his promotion as Major for his services in the battle of Vittoria, and his L.Colonelcy and a medal for that of Orthes. During the campaign of 1815, he served on the Continent as a Col. on the staff, and as such was attached to the army of the Prince Royal of Wirtemberg, and was present at, and reported to Government the operations of that army up to the period of H. R. H.'s attack on Gen. Rapp, and driving him into the fortress of Strasburg, as also during its march towards Paris. L.-Col. J. is Lieutenant of Dover Castle.

1378. LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JOHN BELL, C. B.

CAPT. 4th foot, 12th March, 1812; brevet Maj. 21st June, 1813; Dep.-Quar.-Mast.-Gen. under Sir E. Pakenham and brevet L.-Col. 12th April, 1814. He is how on half-pay. Served on the staff in Spain and Portugal, as an Assist.-Quar.Mast.-Gen.; and has received a cross for the battles of the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes, and Toulouse: subsequently served as a Dep.-Quar.-Mast.-Gen. in France. He is a Companion

of the Bath.

1379. LT.-COL. SAMUEL BENJAMIN AUCHMUTY, C. B. LIEUT. 68th foot, 13th March, 1800; Capt. 68th foot, 14th Nov. 1805; Capt. 70th foot, 5th July, 1806; Capt. 7th foot, 22d Oct. 1807; Maj. 28th Oct. 1813; and brevet L.-Col. 12th April, 1814. This officer served in Spain and Portugal:
