GENTLEMEN,

I Am very fenfible how much the most elaborate Per

formance of mine wou'd ftand in need of Candour from the ingenuous Reader, and much more fo, the folowing Sermon, which was wrote in the Midft of Hurry, and Confufion. Nothing therefore, cou'd have induc'd me to print it, but your Requeft, and the Poffibility of its being of Service, in these days of common Danger, to fome, in whofe Hands, perhaps, it may fall.

MAY then your Defire, or rather Command, (to whom I am under fo many Obligations,) and an Heart warm'd with true Zeal for our happy Conftitution, both in Church, and State, be my Apology to the Publick for this Difcourfe; May your Name and Patronage, the Honesty of my Intention, and the Integrity

Be of good Courage, and let us play the Men for our People, and for the Cities of our God: and the Lord do that which feemeth him good.

rere N this Chapter, we have an Account of a folemn Embaffy, fent by David unto Hanun, King of the Children of Ammon, with the Compliments of Condolence on the Death of his Father Nabafb. And after the Ambaffadours had acquited themselves of their friendly, and amicable Commiffion, the Courtiers of Hanun pretending a Sufpicion, that the Ambaffadours were fent by David, upon fome base defign, infused fuch finifter Notions into their weak Prince's Mind, that he caufed them to be treated with Indignity, and Difgrace; and in a fhameful Manner fhaving off one half of their Beards, and cuting their Garments in the Middle, sent them away. David heinously refented this barbarous Treatment of his Ambaffadours; of which the Ammonites not wanting Intelligence, and diftrufting their own Strength, hired upwards of Thirty Thousand Auxiliary Forces. And when David heard of it, he fent Joab, and all the Hoft of the Mighty Men; not thinking it prudent to ftay till they affaulted him in his own Country, but went and invaded them in theirs. And before the Engagement, Joab makes this animating
