i This is the first edition of the Authorized Scotch version; which is taken in great part from that by Rous. In April 1646, when Rous' last revised and amended version appeared, the House of Commons ordered "that "Rous' Psalms, and no other, shall "be sung in all churches and chapels "within England, Wales, and Ber"wick-upon-Tweed after the first of "next January."-The Lords concurred with this order.

Afterwards, the Scottish General Assembly took this translation in hand, and submitted it to the animadversions of several Presbyteries: and when it was at length altered and improved, the Assembly ordered, on 23d

November, 1649, that it should be printed and published for public use: authorizing it to be the only Paraphrase of the Psalmes of David to "be sung in the Kirk of Scotland; "and discharging the Old Paraphrase, "and any other, to be used in any congregation or family after Ist May, 1650." Thus, at length, the old Scottish version, first printed in 1564 by Lekpreuik, became formally superseded. This more modern one has remained during two centuries unaltered, except by a few slight variations in orthography. [D. Laing's Notice of the Metrical Scottish versions, 8°. 1842.]

In the dedication are to be found some particulars relative to Rous's version, and its revision by Barton ; which last performance having been referred by the House of Commons to certain of their body to be examined, was not altogether approved of, being deemed by them too poetical; but the censors did themselves intend to compile a new one out of it.
