Marriages and Births; Deaths. Kingston, Jamaica, June 14 Wednesday about midnight, was felt in this town, a moft tremendous fhock of an earthquake, which lafted better than a minute and a half, and threw the inhabitants into the greatest confternation, the houfes fhaking in fo terrible a manner, that their deftruction was each moment expected; but (thanks to the almighty) no particular damage has enfued. We hear from Port Royal, that the fhock was.. fo very violent there, that the inhabitants were up the whole night, and under the utmoft dread of a like catastrophe to that which befel their unhappy town, on the 7th of June, 1692, when two thirds of it were fwallowed up, and a great number of lives a loft. We have much the fame accounts from Spanish-town and Liguanea..

FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

line, each of fixty-four guns, befides a frigate, two bomb veffels, and feveral transports. There are also arrived at Rochfort three ships of war of fixty guns each, and four frigates, all built at Genoa, where they are fill employed in constructing divers other hips, as well for the fervice of this crown as for that of Madrid.

Paris, July 19. The late affembly of the clergy, among their latter refolutions, agreed, in confequence of a representation which had been made of the fufferings of the family of Calas, that a penfion should be granted to Lewis Calas, befides a prefent of an hundred kouis d'ors. They alfo refolved to give the fum of two hundred thousand livres towards the redemption of captives in Morocco.

Paris, Auguâ 13. By an arret of the council of ftate, dated Auguft 1, 1766, the king bas directed, that the Canada bills, which are English property, fhall be admitted to be eleared in the manner directed by the arret of council of the 15th of December 1764 ; the forms prefcribed by the convention of the 29th of March lat, and fome articles annexed to the prefent arret of council, being previously complied with.

Madrid, July 15. The remains of the fately deceafed queen-dowager are to be depofited in the collegiate church of St. lidephonie, by the fide of the king her confort, who founded the church. The mourning is to continue fix months, reckoning from the day of her death.

Aranjuez, June 30. Don Francis de Sallefar a Corvetto, a native of Murcia, where his father was regidor, was last Friday publickly degraded at Madrid from the rank of mobility, had his tongue and his right hand cut off, and was afterwards hanged. His crime was aslaffinating fome perfons, and ha

ving formed the horrid defign of laying his facriligious hands upon the king and the royal family,

Rome, July 5. The young chevalier has retired from this city to Albano, a feat of his late father's, after feveral indignities offered Lim by this court. We are told he lives in great privacy there, which is imagined to be owing to the lowness of his finances; for it is believed he has a spirit to do otherwife if he could.

Civita Vecchia, July 14. The pope's dominions experience a greater fearcity of corn this year than the two preceding ones; to remedy which, it is agreed to employ part of the treasure amaffed by Sixtus Quintus, to buy up large quantities of corn, for which feveral commiffions are already fent to Dantzick and England.

The prior of the Irish Dominicans, and the rectors of the three colleges of English, Irish, and Scotch jefuits, established at Rome, have been banished; the first to this city, and the others to different colleges out of the capital, for paying honours appropriated to royalty, to prince Edward Stuart.

Rome, July 23. A confiftory was held the day before yesterday, when the archbishop of Chalcedonia in partibus (major damo of the apoftolical palace) and the archbishop of Athens in partibus (mafter of the chamber) were created cardinals.

Conftantinople, July 1. On Thursday the 26th paft, John Murray, Efq; his Britannic majefty's ambaffador to the Porte, went in great ftate, accompanied by most of the gentlemen of the factory, and the Drugomen, and had an audience of the grand vizier, who received him with all poffible marks of esteem and friendship. And this day he went in the fame state to, and had an audience of, the grand fignior, who was feated on a mɔgnificent throne, attended by the grand vizir and his high treasurer: the grand fignior res ce ved him with politeness, and expreffed great refpect for his Britannic majefty; and was pleafed to fay, that he would always protect the confuls, merchants, drugomen, and all the fubjects of the king of Great Britain, in their privileges in this empire.

The damage, which this city and the pubJick works have fuftained from the earthquake, is computed at near a million and a half fterling.

Vienna, Auguft.6. Letters just arrived from Conftantinople, dated the 15th ult. import, that that unhappy city had fuftained, the evening before, a fresh shock of an earthquake, pretty confiderable, preceded by a fubterraneous bellowing noife; and that among other damages occafioned by this calamity, a funmer-houfe of the grand fignior's, placed at the extremity of the marine arfenal, had been thrown down.

410 Hamburghers, and the thips will take their departure from Hamburgh for China, and return to Hamburgh again to unload. Each hip of this company, it is faid, is to pay, on its return from China, 5000 rixdollars to the king. Two only are to go the first year, but they are to fail together.

Copenhagen, July 21. The king has iffued an edict permitting the wear of all forts of gold and filver-laced cloaths, provided the lace is of the manufacture of this kingdom. This permiffion is to commence the first of January, 1767, and his majefty has likewife taken this opportunity to renew the prohibition of the wear of diamonds and foreign rich ftuffs.
