PREFACE

TO THE SECOND EDITION.

IN sending forth a second edition of the "Domestic Memoirs," the author desires to offer up his humble gratitude to God, for the gracious measure of success which He has been pleased to vouchsafe to the work. Most especially does he thank God, for having enabled him, from the profits which the sale. of his book has produced, to present to that admirable institution, the Church Missionary Society, the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds.

While thus expressing his devout thankfulness for the unmerited goodness so condescendingly bestowed upon him, the author would reverentially invoke the same Divine goodness, to extend a corresponding blessing to the present publication.

From the religious public the writer is encouraged to hope for, and expect, an enlarged measure of patron

age; from the consideration of the great reduction that has been made in the price of the present edition; for while the first was published at twelve shillings, the one now issued is reduced to six.

Greatly, however, as the author desires to benefit the noble institution to which the profits of his work are devoted, he must confess, that such an object forms but a secondary consideration. The first wish of his heart is, that, as his book is based on the Scriptures of eternal truth, a large spiritual benefit may be derived, in the perusal of it, by those who may honour these pages with their favourable notice; and that his humble efforts, in however small a degree, may serve to elevate the tone of society, and promote the sacred cause of religion and piety.

London, May, 1852.
